。。。more

Good book, yet it's by FAR most apropos to software development (or maybe more generally, product development)。 It's true that one in another area can benefit, but it's not always clear, and it should be very clear that this is not directly about optimizing general workflow。 I would have rated it higher had the title not been a bit misleading。 My environment is very different and it was not always easy to see what did and didn't apply because the WHY behind the recommendations was not always cle Good book, yet it's by FAR most apropos to software development (or maybe more generally, product development)。 It's true that one in another area can benefit, but it's not always clear, and it should be very clear that this is not directly about optimizing general workflow。 I would have rated it higher had the title not been a bit misleading。 My environment is very different and it was not always easy to see what did and didn't apply because the WHY behind the recommendations was not always clear。 But I did get some out of this。 。。。more

There were some really great tips in here about productivity! It really nailed some of the big pain points in so many offices/businesses when it comes to workload and efficient productivity。 This one was worth the read and I've recommended it to some friends。 There were some really great tips in here about productivity! A great read on productivity and getting things done by making the work visible。 Love the visualization and the explanation, especially on the 5 thieves of time。 This book also covers a lot of concepts from Kanban and is very relevant to the current agile practices and modern time in which everyone seems to be overwhelmed by the insurmountable amount of tasks and distractions。I highly recommend this book for "busy" people who are looking for better ways to manage the "busyness"。 A great read on productivity and getting things done by making the work visible。 Love the visualization and the explanation, especially on the 5 thieves of time。 This book also covers a lot of concepts from Kanban and is very relevant to the current agile practices and modern time in which everyone seems to be overwhelmed by the insurmountable amount of tasks and distractions。I highly recommend this book for "busy" people who are looking for better ways to manage the "busyness"。 。。。more

It took me a long while to get through this book。 I saw there's a new edition coming, but I wouldn't take the time to re-read it。 There's just no place for this stuff now if your team is using Jira or something similar。 And, *spoiler alert*, people aren't getting together in rooms with piles of post-its and markers anymore。 It took me a long while to get through this book。 I saw there's a new edition coming, but I wouldn't take the time to re-read it。 There's just no place for this stuff now if your team is using Jira or something similar。 And, *spoiler alert*, people aren't getting together in rooms with piles of post-its and markers anymore。 。。。more

This has a lot of great productivity tips。 It’s told in a readable, digestible format。 My critique though, is that the good stuff is hidden in a ton of waffle。Some highlights / takeaways:“When we can’t see our work, our options are obscured。 We’re blind to our own capacity and we certainly can’t communicate that capacity to others。 The resultant mental overload creates stress。”Do not squander time for that is the stuff life is made of。—Benjamin Franklin“Time is life—use time wisely。 We workers a This has a lot of great productivity tips。 It’s told in a readable, digestible format。 My critique though, is that the good stuff is hidden in a ton of waffle。Some highlights / takeaways:“When we can’t see our work, our options are obscured。 We’re blind to our own capacity and we certainly can’t communicate that capacity to others。 The resultant mental overload creates stress。”Do not squander time for that is the stuff life is made of。—Benjamin Franklin“Time is life—use time wisely。 We workers are drowning in nonstop requests for our time。 From developers to IT operations people, it’s overwhelming to keep up with the ever increasing demand”-context switching kills our ability to settle into work“Kanban is a visual pull system based on constraints that allow workers to pull work when they have availability instead of work being pushed onto them regardless of their current workload”“My boss asked me, “Hey, do you want to manage the SAP Basis team as part of managing the build and release team?” Like an idiot, I said yes。 I don’t know how I could have possibly set myself up for more failure。”Limit WIPContext switching prevents flow Don’t people please Don’t underestimate tasks Don’t accept work just to be a team player / avoid humiliation When people say “do you have 5 mins?” you should say no “Every dependency doubles your chance of being late”There is one most important thing—let people know what it is(Be clear about priority 1)The more people invest in a project, the harder it becomes to abandon it, even when a more rational decision based off of future value would be better。 This is known as sunk cost fallacyTime is what we want most, but what we use worst。—William PennHost retros specifically about time wasting activities 。。。more

Good intro book to lean management and WIP constraints。 I would recommend this book to anyone who is beginning their journey in improving flow of work。 For advanced practitioners, while the book still offers some clever ideas, it will not bring major revelations。

This provides an introduction to Kanban by first raising and then answering:- Why do you need it in the first place? - The book starts with the real-life experiences of the authors that uncover how their time was being stolen by the most common thieves。 These thieves being the unplanned work, too much WIP, every work being the top priority, etc。, with the elephant in the room being "Telling yes to anyone anytime!"。 I found this section to be very relevant and was able to find these common thieve This provides an introduction to Kanban by first raising and then answering:- Why do you need it in the first place? - The book starts with the real-life experiences of the authors that uncover how their time was being stolen by the most common thieves。 These thieves being the unplanned work, too much WIP, every work being the top priority, etc。, with the elephant in the room being "Telling yes to anyone anytime!"。 I found this section to be very relevant and was able to find these common thieves in my scenarios as well。- How to use it with your team? - In the 2nd section of the book, the author starts with the basics of Kanban and supports the learning by adding some real-life examples。 I found them to be generic enough to get myself started。- How to use it to make decisions? - As the work is visible, thanks to Kanban and the team, it can help out everyone in deciding the next set of tasks to pick。 This visibility can also help in figuring out the "bigger picture"。Being a novice I found this book to be a necessary read and I will recommend it to anyone wondering how their time vanishes without the work getting completed。 。。。more

I have mixed feelings on this one。The short description of this is that it's a high level overview of Kanban。 If you're already aware of what that is though a whole bunch of this book will mostly be familiar to you。 So while this is a really well put together book I didn't come away from it bristling with new ideas。 That would be different if the concept had been new to me though I have mixed feelings on this one。The short description of this is that it's a high level overview of Kanban。 If you're already aware of what that is though a whole bunch of this book will mostly be familiar to you。 So while this is a really well put together book I didn't come away from it bristling with new ideas。 That would be different if the concept had been new to me though 。。。more

DNF 70%If you do not work in IT。。。 and even if it is It, then if it is not a project-based IT - then the book has nothing to offer you。 At the beginning there was a promise that a person in each industry and each department will be able to learn something but it was not true for me。 Nothing adequate for my work, no interesting data, no wide-known cases that could be a lesson。
